And the winner is…….

Firstly, thank you to everyone who liked, shared and commented on our competition, we appreciate your support. It was so hard to choose a winner with so many amazing answers and  so much love between friends, family, husbands, wives, partners etc. Special mention to those who said they would take me to dinner, bonus points for you, I could certainly do with a lovely night at Albie’s. Unfortunately bias can not be used in this case and I have been over and over your comments to find a winner. So I would like to congratulate Donna Reeve on winning our competition. Donna is going to take her hubby out to celebrate their 43rd anniversary and I think anyone who has managed to stay together for 43 years deserves a massage and dinner on us. Congratulations again Donna I will be in touch directly with details. Small business is hard and we all like to support each other. For those who missed out please treat yourself and book a massage with and one of our 3 amazing therapists, maybe some Acupuncture with Wendi or find that time to head on into St Albi for an amazing night out.

Stay at your best,

Nikki

Exciting News! Acupuncture is coming.

We are excited to announce that Acupuncture is coming to Ellis Remedial by way of the lovely Wendi Williams. Wendi and Nikki have previously worked together massaging but she has branched out and is now practicing in Acupuncture. Wendi comes to us with a world of training and knowledge in complimentary medicine and her level of training speaks for itself. It includes an Advanced Diploma in Naturopathy and diploma of remedial massage from Nature Care College in Sydney, followed 2 years later by a Batchelor of Health Science (complimentary health) and graduated in 2017 with a Masters of Acupuncture from RMIT university in Melbourne. Wendi has over 25 years experience in the complimentary health field and is brilliant at what she does. To begin with she will be working Tuesday mornings until she builds a client base and then we will look at extra days. This makes Ellis Remedial the only clinic North of Hobart that offers massage, cupping, dry needling, Acupuncture and naturopathy all in the one convenient spot. With easy access, wheelchair friendly and plenty of parking, our clinic is your number one spot to keep you at your best.

Call now to book your appointment.

Ellis Remedial Therapies

Being a massage therapist at an International tournament.

Well here we are, It’s Friday already, one day away from the finals and the end of my first ever International event working for the WTA. What a week it has been. I turned up last Friday a little nervous about what lay ahead. Stepping into the unknown working with people I don’t know and on athletes that I have only previously seen on T.V. My nerves were instantly settled once I stepped into the treatment area to meet the Physios and directed to my treatment room. What an amazing bunch of people to work alongside. Relaxed, funny and so helpful. It wasn’t long before the players started rolling through the doors for their massages and it was game on. I was smashed. For 4 whole days it was like a never ending train of athletes on and off the table. By day 2 I was starting to feel the effects of not only working back to back solid but also my lack of massage for myself that is well overdue. Day 2 ended around 7:30pm and I was well and truly exhausted. Note writing was never going to get done on the same day and that started to become a mounting concern for me. I was assured we could catch up, but the way things were going I never thought I would see the day. As I left the centre on day 2 and headed towards home I realised my day was not over. Coming past the Botanical gardens and there in front of me was a motorbike laying on it’s side. The rider was standing on the pavement holding his shoulder and fellow onlookers were unsure of what to do. After a bit of fist aid and a hand over to ambulance services I was finally on my way home. Day 3 and 4 was much the same as the first 2 days although by this stage faces started to become familiar and although I still had trouble pronouncing names, I was beginning to understand the game of tennis at a deeper level. One thing I have definitely learnt is that these girl are machines and the basic ruled of sports massage kind of go out the window. I have never worked so deep on any athlete before and I swear you cold roll over these girl with a steam roller and they would be fine! Wednesday was change over day with Jodie, my saviour! I finally got to sleep in for the first time in weeks. I got up and had a ride on the spin bike, I started to feel human again. My body however was not as excited as I was. I was hurting all over and the slight burning through my forearm extensors was reminding me of what I had put them through over the past 4 days. I headed back to the tennis that day to actually watch some games but unfortunately was eluded by the sun and my attempt at bronzing up a tan had failed me. Thursday I returned to the event to work. Finally the onslaught had eased and I actually got some down time to catch up on notes (that I had managed to stuff up and needed to re do!). It was a good day to have a bit of a chat to players still here in the tournament and to have a good laugh with the Physios and medical team. The down side to working here is that you have to wait around for an hour after each match so bed time last night was well after midnight by the time I drove home,  fed the cat, checked emails for todays order of play and finally turned off the light. Quarter finals today means only 4 matches. My sheet is clean at the moment so I have time to chill and update you all on what’s been happening. Yesterday I planted the seed to hopefully get a gig at the Aus open in coming years, so we will see how that all pans out. One thing I have learnt this week is that I need to really make time for me this year to get my fitness back on track and be as healthy as I can be so I can continue to work at events like this and still look after all my wonderful clients back at the clinic. I will be back on board next week but so far I am fully booked. I then take a week off for some RnR without the crazies of Christmas/NYE etc. I will then return on Tuesday Jan 30th and will be back on board until mid year. Jodie and Jimmy are also available and we are hoping to get Jimmy onto the online booking system in the next week or two. For now I bid you farewell from the Hobart International. Be good, be safe and stay at your best.

Thank you and Merry Christmas

Now that I am officially on holidays I have time to sit down and type this out. Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who have supported my business throughout the year. To those who ended up in Maxwell Street after we moved as Google took forever to change our address, I am sorry. Thank you for your patience and for calling to be directed to the new premises. To those who had to endure noise during your massage while my builder completed our 2nd treatment room thank you also for your patience. It has been a massive year at Ellis Remedial with the move and the introduction of two new therapists to help me carry the load. It had been a fantastic year and we have you guys to thank for that. It goes without saying that without you we cease to exist. For all the bookings, referrals, and compliments, we say thanks. I want to take the time to wish you all a wonderful Christmas period and a safe and happy new year. The new year will bring plenty more exciting adventures for us starting with the Hobart International in January. I’m sure Jodie has a few crazy races up her sleeve and Jimmy, well lets just keep him away from rock climbing and we will be good! So from all of us here, to all of you out there, here’s Cheers to you all.

See you next year

Nikki.

Ps don’t forget Jodie and Jimmy are still working this week if you need appointments.

Conquering mountains

On Sunday it was that time of year again that we all love to hate, time to conquer that beauty that is the backdrop to our city in the 23rd Point to Pinnacle. Every year I ask myself why am I doing it to myself? Every year when sitting back at the Casino after the event I vow to return. It may seem completely insane running 21.1km up hill and well, maybe it is. But it’s the feeling of overwhelming achievement when you reach that finish line that makes it all worth while. It is a mental game every year. This year I struggled massively. Heading into race day with virtually no running for the previous 3-4 weeks and a head full of cold, it was never going to be my best effort. I had to get out of my own head space and accept that and then move on to a new mindset of just making it to the top. That was my goal and we achieved it, that is all that matters. We started in perfect conditions, sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. A stark contrast to the previous year when we started in rain and had to be turned around at the half way point to run back down the hill to the casino due to the atrocious weather conditions at the top. Nope Sunday was perfect. Well for those who can handle the heat it was perfect, for the rest of us it was just one massive struggle. At 8am the siren sounded and more than 1500 runners set off for either the pinnacle, 21.1km away, or the pub, 10km away. The event attracted around 3000 entrants in total but the walker set off an hour earlier at 7am. Running along Sandy Bay Road I felt ok. Pace was good, I didn’t feel too lethargic and I thought I was going to get through the race ok with the aim to run to the Springs and walk from there. What I didn’t account for was the head full of snot that was still hiding up my nose from a head cold kindly passed on by my darling Nephew 2 weeks before and the heat that would radiate from that sun. Even though it was early in the morning, without a cloud in sight and no wind it was intense. I made it to the first drink station and oh my was I relieved! walking through to ensure a took on enough fluids, I downed the water and continued on my way. It was between the first and 2nd drink station I hit the wall bad, mentally and physically. The intensity of the sun was getting to me and my lack of kilometers in the legs was starting to show. Ali ran with me the whole way and was always just ahead, keeping me focused on not loosing her in the field. I caught a glimpse of Matt Lancaster running across the road and after a passing G’day I found a 2nd wind. It lasted all of a minute! Not far past that point I heard Emma running up behind me. Now the last time she ran up behind me when we were doing this race we didn’t know each other and the words I was saying in my head as she ran past me with ease are not Facebook friendly. Ha! This time was different. Although I did feel like I was dying, this time as she passed me she knew who I was, her words of encouragement to just take it 100m at a time rang in my ears. I was on massive struggle street and was looking just to get to each road sign. She was running up hill pushing a child in a pram for the Just like Jack team! A few minutes after that I gave up. I was heady, hot and struggling to breathe. If it had not of being for Ali and her encouragement I quite possible would have called it quits this year. I wasn’t even 6km in and it just all seemed too hard. In the end I managed to run about 7km and then it was all a steady walk. After the drink stations I found a little more energy to run in sections but it wasn’t for long. I was hurting, but so was everyone else. We hit the mountain and so begun the big climb. The good thing about the mountain is that once you get on there you just count down the km’s. I know that the springs is about 3km up and man was that a welcome site! music, lollies, bubbles but the best of all WATER! and lots of it. There was a girl holding a hose for everyone to get wet, I walked straight towards her and had my 2nd shower of the day. It was wonderful! The smartest thing I did was hold onto my drink cup! It would seem that between the springs and the chalet there is an abundance of could mountain water! It was a constant pouring of water over the body that regulated my body temp and helped me survive the increasing heat. Approaching the turn on big bend, someone finally ordered some air conditioning and a nice breeze was very welcome indeed! There was about 3.5km to go. With my trusty Garmin keeping me posted on time left and Ali continually reminding me that I could do it, the end was near. And then it was there! The finish line! I could see the flags, we were 2km away, it was nothing, we were there. I swear though in the last km of this race the mind takes over and almost wins. I’m not sure if it’s the emotions of actually seeing the end after the grueling 19km behind you or if it is the body just saying enough, but that last stretch carries some demons. There was a lady not 300m from the finish line struggling to breathe, competitors rallying around her to help and to get her across the line. There was an older gentleman struggling to walk about 800m out, I called him up to the top side of the road where it was flat hoping it would help ease the pain. I was in good spirits, we had reached the finish, with 100m to go I grabbed my girl’s hand and we crossed that finish line in 3hours 25minuts. That is a long time to be out in the sun walking up a hill! It was nowhere near my best time but all things considered I was just glad to get to the top. Once there the atmosphere was party like. Thanks to the stunning weather, people hung around at the top in droves and the bus convoy definitely started much later than previous years. The Mo Bros were at the finish line cheering everyone through, teams gathered for photos and stories, individuals sat and enjoyed the sun, mates hugged, medals hung from the necks of all, the mountain had once again been conquered. So much behind the scenes stuff that you don’t hear about though is the organization, the volunteers that stand by the roadside handing us drinks, SES making sure everyone is ok, Tas Police keeping the roads safe and clear, the crew back at the casino putting us back together with food, drinks, massages. The P2P is in my opinion by far the best run event on the calendar. If you ever wanted to do it but don’t have anyone to do it with or you are just too scared, just sign up and do it. You will have 3000 instant friends helping you along the way. To all my clients who completed their chosen event on Sunday congratulations, what an effort. Thank you Kim and Guy for putting on such an amazing event in our beautiful city on our beautiful mountain. Worlds toughest half marathon indeed!

Hobart International Tennis

I have just been advised that Ellis Remedial has secured the massage gig at the Hobart international for 2018. This is a super exciting event for Jodie and I as we will be working on International tennis players on the WTA circuit. What this means is that between January 5th to the 14th I will be unavailable for massage. Jodie and Jimmy will be available on certain days so the doors will stay open for you.

As I am taking leave the week before and after Christmas, there will only be a few day in between before I start at the tennis so we need to start thinking ahead and getting your post Christmas massage booked in.

I am super excited to be given the opportunity to do this event. Every year I say I am going to watch and never get there. It’s taken this to ensure I finally get there in 2018. Roll on January!

Nik

Christmas and extended hours.

Yes it’s that time of the year again where we must think about Christmas and when we are going to be open. The good news is that we will be open right up until the 22nd of December. Nikki will be taking the week leading up to Christmas off and the week between Christmas and the new year. Jimmy will be covering the week leading up to Christmas and Jodie will be working her normal Thursday and Friday afternoon as well as the Monday. The week between Christmas and New Year will only see Jodie working the afternoons on the Thursday 28th and Friday 29th.

I am excited to announce that Jimmy will be returning to us in a few weeks which is great news. Also Jodie has decided to do a few more shifts between now and the end of the year which will make it easier for you guys to get in. They are as follows,

Sat 11/11 8am-1pm Get excited, we don’t usually open of a Saturday so if you want a massage on this day I suggest you book in fast.

Monday 4/12 8am-6pm

Monday 11/12 12pm-6pm

Monday 18/12 12pm-6pm

Don’t forget we also sell gift voucher which are always well received by those getting them for Christmas. They are also a great option for hard working staff who wouldn’t necessarily treat themselves to a massage during the year. Be the best boss ever!

Appointments, Jodie is back!

I just wanted to post this to let you all know what we have coming up. Jodie is almost healed after her last race and is pretty impressed that she is actually able to wear a t-shirt in Hobart after all. The sun does come out sometimes and when it does we all know how important it is to slip slop slap in out Tassie sun. Thankfully she is returning to work this Thursday and still has a couple of appointments available. If you are looking to book an appointment online and nothing works for you please don’t hesitate to call, we may be able to still fit you in somewhere. Also I have just noticed that our calendars are not syncing to the booking system so they are showing Jodie as booked out on her Thursdays. This is not the case and I have my tech man onto it. So again, if you are looking to book in and can’t find a spot online, please call. Jodie has the following times available this week,

Thurs 1/2hr slot @ 4:30

Fri 12:30, 1:45 & 3pm she could also do a 1/2hr @ 4:15

I am pretty full for the next few weeks and don’t have an appointment available until the 3rd of November. This doesn’t mean there wont be cancellations so if you need to see me let me know and I will put you on the cancellation list.

This Friday will be my last Friday at Sandy Bay meaning I will have 3 more spots available every 2nd Friday from the 3rd of November also. This should help get everyone through the door.

That is about all for now, enjoy the sunshine,

Nikki
